Camogie National League Division 2

Carlow 2-4

Kilkenny 0-6

CARLOW got their national league campaign back on a winning track with a battling four-point win over neighbours Kilkenny in Piltown on Sunday.

Carlow started the brighter on the heavy pitch and opened the scoring in the third minute with a 45 by Eleanor Tracey after Kilkenny goalie Kirsty Maher fumbled the slitor over her own endline.  Kilkenny answered with a point of their own from an Angela Kenneally free.  Carlow almost found a goal two minutes later only for Maher to pull off a fine stop from a stinging Ciara Quirke shot. Carlow were rewarded for there efforts when Ciara Quirke found herself in on goal. A brave Maher smothered her first shot but Quirke dispatched a second strike to the back of the net to give Carlow a deserved lead on 12 minutes which they never relinquished.  Kilkenny added a second point to there tally from Catherine Walsh but Carlow held a 1-1 to 0-2 half-time lead.

Carlow started the second half well with a free from Eleanor Tracey edging them further ahead before Kilkenny answered with a point from a long-range free. But Carlow then handed Kilkenny a sucker punch when a long-range free from Eleanor Tracey dropped short and Michelle Nolan was on hand to slot the slitor to the back of the Kilkenny net for a second time and give Carlow a 2-2 to 0-3 lead with 14 minutes gone in the second half. Carlow added another free to bring Eleanor Tracey’s tally for the day to 0-3. Michelle Nolan slotted over a fine point from play to stretch Carlow’s lead to seven with 10 minutes left to play. Kilkenny added three points to their tally in those last 10 minutes, two from the stick of Aine Fahey from frees and a point from play from substitute Margaurite Hoynes. But Carlow held out for a deserved four-point victory.

Carlow had fine displays from Niamh Quirke, Kate Nolan and Aine Ryan in the back line while Ciara Quirke and Michelle Nolan pulled the strings in the forward line. Kilkeny had fine displays from Angela Kenneally, Edel Frisby and Aine Fahey.
