The Carlow Community games U15 boys and girls badminton competitions were hosted recently by Ballinabranna badminton club. Three teams took part in both competitions from Ballon/Rathoe, St Lazerians and Myshall. As there were three teams round robin system was used with Ballon/Rathoe playing St Lazerians in the girls.

St. Lazerian’s girls badminton team

The Ballon/Rathoe team Kerry Nolan, Marie O’Neill, Leanne Carroll, Aoibhe Connolly and Amy Maloney were outmanoeuvred by the St Lazerian’s team of Amanda Walsh, Nicole Sheenan Farrell, Elllie Glynn, Isabel O’Donavan, Eva McDonald and Rhionnon Byrne and they progressed to the final.

Ballon Rathoe girls badminton team

Ballon/Rathoe then played the Myshall girls Sarah James, Leah James, Caoimhe Jordan, Danielle Nolan, Lonna Byrne and Eabha Kelly where the Myshall girls won 2-1 to meet St Lazerians in the final. The St Lazerians girls came out on top in the final to claim county titles and gold medals.

The Boys competition saw the same teams compete. Ballon/Rathoe’s Lorcan Doyle, Cormac Kinsella, Adam Nolan, Conor Bolger, Danny Broderick and Ciaran Lewis fought hard but St Lazerians’ team of Josh Hughes, Mark Fitzgerald, Paul Fitzgerald, Jack Dunne, Peter Mulleney, James Lowry were winners.

The Ballon/Rathoe lads then went on to play the Myshall team of Conor Byrne, Jack Nolan. Rigertas Rulkaunkad, Fiach Kavanagh, Ciaran Murphy and Colm Beck with Myshall winning all three games to set up a final with St Lazerians.

This final saw the result reversed and Myshall boys took the honours with aces in the third set of two games to claim the gold medals. Thanks to Ballinabranna badminton club who hosted this event. There was almost five hours of badminton played to decide Carlow’s county champions and we wish St Lazerians girls and Myshall boys the best of luck as they progress to the Leinster competition.
