CARLOW Rowing Club held its annual awards night recently to recognise members who have won competitions and also to thank those who have worked tirelessly as volunteers throughout 2016.
Club secretary Majella Keating took the reins for the night as MC and as is tradition, club coaches selected individual crew members for recognition for their outstanding contribution during the year. Female coach Kathryn Wall named Keara Egan as the most outstanding from her group. The boys junior 14/16 male coach, Sean Jones, selected Dach Murray while junior 18 and senior men’s coach Paddy Behan selected Jack Keating.
Mary Clare Byrne was chosen from the recreational rowers group by Peadar Doyle.
Jack Keating and masters rower Niall O’Brien also received an acknowledgement for their win at last year’s National Rowing Championships.
Aoife Byrne, Cliodhna and Oisin Nolan were all acknowledged for their selection to the Irish Home International team last July. They rowed well in Cardiff and did their club and country proud.
The junior club person of the year was Cian Kelly from Graiguecullen. A former competitive rower, Cian is now a popular coach with the junior men’s group. Cian obtained his level one coaching certificate last year and in doing so became one of the youngest members in the club to achieve this merit. He can now be found every weekend coaching junior members.
Senior club person of the year was Pat Slater. Pat returned to the club in recent years when his daughter joined the club and he has worked tirelessly in that time.
Pat also completed his L1 coaching course and can be seen most weekends either on the bike coaching or out in the boat with the recreational rowers.
The night also saw the newly qualified coaches receive their coaching awards. Two club members who took the plunge and got married last year were Cormac Ryan and Rhona Nolan who met as teenagers in the club. Alan McKenna and Niamh Duffy also tied the knot in October and received a presentation from the club.
As in previous years, an enjoyable night finished with a table quiz and ROSO draw.
