TV personality Francis Brennan breezed into Askea Country Market on Friday morning to film a segment for a new series of his popular programme, At your service.
Brigid Osborne, a much-loved matriarch of market, said that the effervescent presenter was as bubbly in real life as he was on the telly.
“I was standing there talking to him about the market and then he told me to say it all again on camera, I nearly had a stroke!” laughed 83-old Brigid. “He’s very professional but lots of fun, too. He’s lovely!”
The RTÉ camera crew was in Carlow to film the launch of a new range of products of jams and fruit juices that come from Shankill Castle in Paulstown, Co Kilkenny, and which are being sold in the Askea market for the first time. The castle will feature next year on Francis’s At your service TV show, where he visits families in the hospitality industry and dishes out advice on how to improve their businesses.
Askea Country Market looked in rude good health for the cameras and was jam-packed with fresh, home-made goodies.
“We had flowers like flocks and gladioli, which really lifted the place,” said Brigid.
“It was lovely. We see ourselves as being a community market where all our customers are locals. We get to know them and they get to know us.”
The market, which was set up in 2002, takes place every Friday morning from 10am to noon in Askea Parish Centre. Fresh breads, cakes, buns, jams, juices and honey are all available to buy from local producers.
