LIGHTNING struck twice for Tullow last Saturday night when, incredibly, two women from the town were picked to appear on RTÉ’s Winning Streak.

Amazingly, Caroline Tierney from Ashbrook, Tullow and Mary Keogh from Hillbrook Estate, Tullow were both selected from the drum to appear as players on the National Lottery gameshow this Saturday night.

For two out of five players to hail from the same small town is astounding. In fact, according to the National Lottery, it’s the first time it’s ever happened.

And adding to the excitement, both women actually know one another.

I’m thrilled to bits … I’m up the walls here since,” an elated Mary told The Nationalist yesterday (Monday).

I was watching it on Saturday night and my heart jumped into my mouth when I heard Caroline’s name coming out. I was absolutely delighted for her,” Mary explained.

I thought to myself then … now Tullow’s gone, sure my own three stars won’t come out and I nearly stopped watching it,” she laughed. “Then I heard my own name come out – my stomach just turned inside-out. I’m just thrilled.”

Caroline is equally excited by her remarkable good luck. “I’m delighted … I didn’t believe it,” she told The Nationalist.

I wasn’t watching the programme so I actually got a phone call from my aunt in Dublin telling me my name had come out. I didn’t believe her at first but then my aunt and niece, who were at a wedding, rang me and then I started getting loads of phone calls and messages on Facebook … it’s brilliant,” Caroline added.

Caroline, who works in Hickson’s SuperValu, Tullow, where she purchased her winning three-stars scratch card, is equally delighted for fellow Tullow resident Mary.

Actually our estates back onto one another. I know Mary, I serve her in the shop and I know her son and daughter, too. It’s great,” said Caroline.

Excitement is building in Tullow as the ladies look towards Saturday night as they keep their fingers crossed that they’ll scoop the top prize of €500,000.

Caroline has a busload heading to the RTÉ studios this Saturday night, including her husband Aidan and extended family and friends. Mary will be equally well supported by family and friends, her daughter Karen, six grandchildren and extended family.

My son Patrick will actually be at a wedding in Cyprus, but what can you do! He’s best man, so he has a big commitment there,” said Mary. “I suppose I am lucky. I won €12,600 in the Parkville United Lotto six years ago and I’m lucky health wise.”

Mary bought her winning three-star scratch card at the Crosskeys, Tullow.

The phone hasn’t stop since Saturday. It’s lovely, all the cards and good luck wishes – it’s great,” Mary added.
