THERE was cruel disappointment for Rathvilly soccer player Eric Molloy at last week’s Fifa Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.
Molloy took to the pitch for Team Wellington in the first round against host club Al Ain last Wednesday and the New Zealand champions started the game brilliantly, racing into a 3-0 lead.
However, the hosts pulled a goal back before half-time and it was all square 3-3 before the 90th minute, sending the game into extra-time.
With no more goals, the game went to penalties and there was heartbreak for Molloy and his team as the hosts held their nerve to win 4-3.
Molloy came into the game as a second-half substitute on 57 minutes and did well in front of over 15,000 fans at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium.
This week, European champions Real Madrid and South American champions River Plate enter the competition at the semi-final stage.
