Carlow opened their account in this year’s ladies football national league with a comfortable win over near neighbours Kilkenny played before a good attendance at IT Carlow grounds on Sunday in very cold conditions.
In a first league outing for new manager Gerry McGill and his charges, Carlow took command in the first half and never looked back with Lauren Dwyer and Cliodhna Ni Shé finding the back on the Kilkenny net with ease.
In the opening quarter, play was even but Carlow’s ability to attack with speed and in numbers yielded those early goals with Niamh Forde leading the line with some driving runs.
By half-time the score had stretched to 4-7 to 0-2 and the eventual outcome was never in doubt largely due to Carlow’s superior teamwork and handling skills.
Kilkenny to their credit fought gamely to the end and had some excellent individual performances from Aobha O’Gorman, Caoilfhionn Horgan, Hannah Scott and Ciara Coone.
From a Carlow perspective, new and returning players such as Aoife Hayden, Kerrel Clarke, Ciara Mullins, Edel Hayden, Cliodhna Ní Shé and Lauren Dwyer all made good contributions while all five substitutes were given a chance to impress in the second-half.
Carlow travel to take on Limerick in their next leauge game this Sunday with a 2pm throw-in in Askeaton.
