CARLOW qualified for the Leinster intermediate final thanks to this four-point win over Kildare at Johnstownbridge at the weekend.
Carlow hit the ground running with Eleanor Treacy pointing but Kildare quickly responded with Caoimhe Shiels finding the Carlow net.
However, Carlow settled into the game much quicker and they soon gained a foothold on the scoreboard too. Ballinkillen’s Treacy pointed twice more before Rachel Sawyer claimed possession, rounded Kildare’s Nicole Malcolmson and blasted past Tanya Johnson in the Kildare net.
A further point from Sawyer left Kildare reeling. Lea Sutton replied with a free for the hosts before Eleanor Treacy scored again for Carlow. Emma Cody then pointed to stretch Carlow’s lead to five.
Kildare were well aware of the pressure that was building on them at this stage and with half-time approaching, Lea Sutton emerged as their bright light.
Three frees in quick succession before the half-time whistle ensured Kildare only faced a two-point deficit at the break despite failing to get into the game for large parts of the opening 30 minutes.
However, Carlow were quickly into the ascendancy once again after the break with Eleanor Treacy pointing four more frees to put her team in a good position.
Kildare continued to work hard but points from Treacy and Eibhe Lawler ensured a solid victory.
Carlow now play Kilkenny in the Leinster intermediate final on Sunday 2 June at 2pm in Portlaoise.
