BALLON has bucked national trends by becoming one of the few villages in the country to open a post office in 2019.

The An Post service opened recently within Centra Zerafa’s service station, offering customers a huge variety of amenities right on their own doorstep.

“It’s been great, it’s going really well,” enthused owner Andrea Zerafa. “There hasn’t been a post office in Ballon for probably about 15 years, so it’s great to now be able to offer people all of the An Post services,” she added.

The closure of the nearby post office in Rathoe, coupled with the population growth in Ballon, prompted An Post to consider the Carlow village as a location.

“It came to our attention that there were plans for a post office in Ballon and we applied to have the service,” said Andrea. “There are so many services now available with the post office, far more than I had previously realised. Obviously, you can get a stamp, but they also do personal loans, current accounts, pay a bill, pay your property tax, saving accounts, car insurance, home insurance, lodgements for AIB and Ulster Bank … so many services,” she added.

Zerafa’s have taken on Bridget Kenny Nolan to operate the post office, with staff member Jack Dunphy also fully trained to undertake all the services available.

Ballon post office is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.30pm and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.

“It been incredible for the business, with lots of faces coming in, and locals are excited to have a post office back in the area,” said Andrea.
