COUNTY Carlow FC and Tullow rugby club will compete for the Carpe Diem Perpetual Cup when the teams meet in their Leinster League Division 1B game on 8 December in Tullow.
The concept of the match came about when John Colgan, owner of both the Carpe Diem Bar in Carlow and the Tara Arms in Tullow, suggested it might add a little bit more bite to a clash which is already one of the most competitive fixtures in Leinster rugby.
A launch took place on Friday in the Carpe Diem Bar with representatives of both clubs present.
“It is always a good local derby but off the pitch we are good friends and the two clubs have a great relationship,” said Carlow president Edel Gibbons.
Her counterpart in Tullow, Paddy Browne, was very enthusiastic about the idea.
“There was a few years where we weren’t in the same league and it is good for both clubs to play each other.
“We are hoping this will be an annual event. There is always a gap in the calender and while we are in the same division, the game will be played home and away each alternate year,” he explained.
As part of the day’s events there will be a fundraising wine reception, pre-match lunch and auction at Blackgates with a host of top-quality lots up for grabs.
Bids are being accepted prior to the day to Noel Nolan (087 8510648) or Eddie Thornton (087 7870757).
Lunch tickets cost €35 and early booking is advised.
