IT Carlow’s development looks set to continue if Carlow County Council approves a planning application for a new state-of-the-art health sciences building.

The college intends to construct the new building on the site of the Institute for Further Education, which is on the grounds of IT Carlow and which will now be demolished to make way for the new high-tech building.

The 6,133m2 building will be single storey in some areas but will extend up to four floors tall in others. It will also feature science laboratories, clinics, sports and health science spaces, including large gym labs and a running track. There are also plans for a central roof-lit social space on the upper floors and a large entrance hall in the southeast corner of the building.

The former VEC site will be completely transformed with landscaping around the perimeter of the building and the removal of older trees, as well as the provision of 176 bicycle parking spaces. The site is to be accessed by an existing vehicular entrance to the IT Carlow Campus off the Kilkenny Road.
