The first count is still a good few hours away but a lot to ponder. Jennifer Murnane O’Connor looks in a healthy position to claim a seat. However, the senator will be wary considering the heartbreak of the 2016 general election when she performed similarly in the first count but could not attract transfers. Pat Deering needs a lot to go right for him with transfers to reclaim his seat. Time will tell.

Final tally is in. Kathleen Funchion (SF) tops the poll with 23.7%. She is followed by John McGuinness (FF) (14.5%). Carlow’s Jennifer Murnane O’Connor (FF) is third with 12.5%. Bobby Aylward (FF) is at 10.4% followed by John Paul Phelan (FG) at 8.65%. Pat Deering (FG) is narrowly behind with 8.1%.
