ARTHUR Gaskin is back at the top of the tree in Irish squash.
The Carlow ace sealed his eighth national senior men’s title at Fitzwilliam on Sunday after a busy weekend of action.
While Gaskin beat first-time finalist Sam Buckley in three sets, he had to battle at certain points before closing out a 11-4, 11-6, 11-6 win.
On his way to the final he had accounted for Oisin Logan in the semi-final 14-12, 12-10, 11-9, Luke Logan in the quarters 11-2, 11-7, 5-11, 11-5 and Karl McLoughney in the first round 11-3, 11-1, 11-1.
Top seed Gaskin’s superior shot selection and greater experience proved crucial throughout the weekend as he brought home the silverware.
Carlow’s Brian Byrne was seeded number two for the tournament but he lost out in his first round game to number 15 seed Alex Smith in a mammoth game: 10-12, 11-13, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8. Byrne went on to take fifth place in the play-offs.
There was more good news on the local front with Claire O’Neill winning her first senior squash national title in the O35 women’s category.
Claire topped her group with wins over Ciara Cullen and Suzanne O’Shaughnessy before going on to beat Siobhan Parker and Ali Magee to win the title
