PÁDRAIG Amond scored his first goal of the new season as Newport County caused yet another cup upset by beating Championship side Watford 3-1 in the Carabao Cup this evening.
Amond and the League 2 side have caused a litany of upsets over the last few years and although Watford have recently been relegated from the Premier Division this ranks up there with their best results and it means that they have qualified for the fourth round of the competition for the first time in the club’s history.
Goals from a Tristan Abrahams penalty and Joss Labadie gave Newport a 2-0 lead by half time but Watford got back into the game when Adalberto Penarand converted a penalty ten minutes into the second half.
Amond’s big moment arrived in the 65th minute when pounced on a loose back pass and made no mistake in beating the visiting goalkeeper.
The result means a potential home tie against Premier League side Newcastle Utd in the fourth round next week if Steve Bruce’s team can overcome Morecambe tomorrow evening.
