THE search to find the young artists who will excel in the 2021 Texaco Children’s Art Competition. Last year, two students from Co Carlow won prizes in the event, which is now in its 67th year and widely acknowledged as the longest-running arts sponsorship in Ireland.

Ten-year-old Lilianne Dempsey from Carlow Educate Together school won a special merit award for ‘Fishy Fishy’, while in the same age category, Muirne Leyden from Creative Processes art classes in Rathoe scooped second prize for her wonderful depiction of a child flying a kite.

Muirne’s composition was described by chairman of the judging panel Professor Declan McGonagle as “an unusual use of materials in creating a very controlled, vibrant and colourful image”.

Professor McGonagle said ‘Fishy Fishy’ “was imaginative and displayed high levels of skill”.

The closing date for entries is Wednesday 24 March. Judging will take place in April, with winners to be announced in May.
