ONE of the great days in Carlow’s sporting calendar is always The Nationalist’s Sports Awards. A gala black tie event when the best sporting moments from around the county are celebrated and we’ve been lucky enough to be joined by guest speakers like Jack Charlton, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge, Mickey Harte and Philly McMahon, as well as all the brilliant winners, down through the years.

Unfortunately the times that we are living in made it impossible to hold the usual event but we still want to mark the best of Carlow sport during 2020 – and we want your help!

Early next month we’ll be hosting on an online event with all the usual award winners but given the unique circumstances we will also have a special Covid Community award and we want your help to pick the winner.

Never before has so much been asked of the beleaguered volunteer within sports clubs and we want to recognise their efforts.

From the biggest sporting clubs to the very smallest, volunteers within clubs have gone above and beyond their usual calling, sometimes just to keep clubs alive and now we want to hear your stories.

We want you to nominate somebody from within your club and tell us the reasons why you believe they should be the winner of the first, and hopefully last, Covid Community award. From your submissions, we will compile a short list and then let the public vote on the winner next week.

It could be a story of the many brilliant fundraising efforts that were made around the county, keeping youngsters involved in training or work around the community. The only stipulation is that it must relate to events within a sports club and during 2020 rather that the early months of this year.

So, get in touch this week. Clearly state the name of the person you are nominating, the reasons why and send it to [email protected] before 5pm on Friday 26 March and if they make the cut for our shortlist they will be involved in the public vote next week.

Keep an eye on The Nationalist, and our social media pages, over the coming weeks for more details about the upcoming Sports Awards online event.
