A van and bus laden with aid will depart from Baltinglass tomorrow and begin a journey to Ukraine. The ‘Mission Ukraine’ bus and van will be at the Square in Baltinglass 10am-3pm on Saturday with a collection being held on the day. Baltinglass man Pat Lee and Rathvilly’s Noel Doyle will then depart for Poland where they have arranged to handover the bus and vehicle.
Donations of good quality children’s clothes and cooked tinned food are sought tomorrow while financial donations are also welcome.
Pat said the plan was for the vehicles to be used to transport aid and Ukrainian defenders to the front lines and bring civilians away from conflict zones.
The idea came about after Pat spoke to a Ukrainian mother of two who has been settled in Baltinglass after fleeing the country.
The woman’s husband, who is still in Ukraine, works in logistics as part of the nation’s defence. Pat said there was great need for buses in Ukraine and it was hoped to transport two more vehicles from Ireland.
He lauded generosity of people locally who had given tremendous support.
Pat purchased the buses through his own company but has received over €8,000 in donations.
