THE work of a Bagenalstown poet has been selected for a recently launched poetry anthology.

Maresa Sheehan from Heath, Corries appears in the ***Chasing Shadows*** anthology, which was edited by renowned poet Noel Monaghan.

More than 700 poems were submitted, with 90 picked from contemporary Irish and international poets.

There is a varied mix of poetry in the collection, with Maresa’s entry ***Tinned sardines*** taking on an usual subject in a light-hearted manner. It imagines the sardines in the ocean, before they find their way into our cupboard presses, dripping with tomato sauce.

“It was just to take a frivolous thing and think you had a life before this,” she said. “At a deeper level, you can see how people come from different lives and places. Just because we see someone in one situation, we shouldn’t forget the wildness in them, or their potential.”

Maresa’s work previously won the Oliver Goldsmith International Literary Festival poetry competition, while she has been commended in the Bridport Poetry Prize and has appeared in the ***Irish Times*** and a number of poetry publications.

A Cork native, Maresa attend the book launch in Edgeworthstown, Co Longford and gave a reading of her poem along with other poets. “It was absolutely lovely to be picked and it was a great launch,” she said

Maresa says that poetry gives us all a moment to stop and reflect.

***Chasing shadows*** is published by Lapwing Publications and is funded by Creative Ireland Longford. The anthology can be purchased from or by contacting [email protected].
