HEARTLESS thieves posed as gardaí at the home of an elderly lady to steal cash in what was described as a ‘despicable act.’

The distressing incident occurred last Friday at approximately  11am at Knockbrack, Myshall.

Two males presented themselves as gardaí showing fake badges to a lady aged in her 90s.

The men entered the house and stole a quantity of cash from a handbag while also searching the house.

A garda spokesperson said they were following all lines of enquiry and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward or anyone who was travelling in the area at the time.

A text alert was sent out on Friday, while CCTV is being canvassed by gardaí. The scene was also examined by a garda scenes of crime unit.

A line of enquiry for gardaí is whether the woman was followed from Myshall village, but this has not yet been established.

A garda spokesperson said: “It’s a despicable act, really. Can you call it anything else?”

Anyone one with information is asked to contact the gardaí in Carlow on 059 9136620.
