Shane O’Rourke and Louise Walker will be taking part in the beautiful walk from Graignamanagh to Carlow town

Carlow Women’s Aid has been chosen as Carlow District Credit Union’s Charity of the Year for 2022.

The vital support group offers support, information, counselling and essential services for adult women who are experiencing or have experienced domestic violence in the home or in close personal relationships.

They offer a listening and support service which is free, confidential, non-judgemental and woman-centred. To help raise vital funds for this great service, Carlow District Credit Union staff are taking part in a 42k Walk from Graiguenamanagh to Carlow on Saturday 15 October.

Shane O’Rourke from Carlow District Credit Union said: “We chose to fundraise for this vital service in Carlow as they want to help keep women and children safe from domestic violence.

The route chosen is the Barrow route, starting at 6am at Graignamanagh, taking in the scenic route via Clashganny, Borris, Goresbridge, Bagenalstown, Leighlinbridge, Milford, Clogrennane, and finishing up at Graiguecullen Bridge, Carlow.

“We thought about how we could help Women’s Aid as a group and came up with the Barrow Walk idea,” explained Shane. “A lot of us in the Credit Union run and walk on a regular basis and this fundraiser just made sense. Our staff can join the walking group at a starting point that they prefer, and we will finish together in Carlow where we look forward to a get together with refreshments.”

Louise Walker, also from Carlow District Credit Union, said: “The emphasis is on an enjoyable day out, taking in the spectacular views of the River Barrow along the way while also fundraising for this very important service being offered in Carlow. We invite our members and the public along the way to support us by cheering us on and also by donating anything they can at the various pit-stops along the route. Members can donate in our Carlow, Rathvilly & Mayo/Doonane offices when they are in transacting their business too.”

Save the date in your diary – Saturday 15 October starting 6am at Graiguenamanagh. We look forward to you cheering us on and supporting this great cause.
