A SCIENCE quiz that attracted 34 teams of students from counties Carlow, Kildare, Laois, Offaly and Wicklow was scooped by a trio of bright sparks from Scoil Chonglais, Baltinglass.
Molly Nolan Thornton, Lee Healy and Aisling Healy used their comprehensive knowledge of science subjects, under the direction of their teacher Elma Nolan, to beat the stiff competition in the exciting quiz. A team of students from St Conleth’s Community College, Newbridge, took the runner-up spot, with Tullamore in third place.
The event was hosted by Coláiste Lorcáin, Castledermot and was organised by the Kildare branch of the Irish Science Teachers’ Association (ISTA). It was geared towards junior cycle students and was overseen by Dorothy Fox, chairperson of the association.
Mick Moriarty, the branch secretary, did a wonderful job as quizmaster, while Rosemary Keegan (branch treasurer) and Amy Sullivan, both teachers in Coláiste Lorcáin, co-ordinated school preparations with help from committee member Katie Edwards.
The teachers were delighted with the interest in the event, which marked a return to the ISTA Junior Science Quiz after several years’ absence due to Covid-19.
