THERE’S nothing like a ray of sunshine to lift the spirits, so the runners and walkers who took part in Carlow town’s 200th Parkrun were brimming with energy and vitality.
Under clear blue skies and glorious sunshine, the free 5km event brought people from all walks of life to Carlow Town Park, as it has done every Saturday morning for years.
A large crowd gathered beside the River Barrow, including some local representatives, before they all set off on the urban run.
Race director Karen Kealy welcomed everyone and thanked her team of volunteers, who make the event possible every week.
While the serious participants sped off, the more leisurely runners and walkers took it easier and enjoyed the atmosphere, some walking dogs and others taking part with their children to make it a family occasion.
The Carlow Parkrun route is very popular as it takes in the beauty of the Barrow Track and finishes in the fabulous amenity of Carlow Town Park. After the run, there’s a cuppa and a good chat, so the sense of community is always lovely.
It is run by the community for the community and is dependent on the goodwill of people to volunteer every week. The buzz of friendly banter and camaraderie fills the air and you just know that this is something special.
