Arts radio station goes global

From this tiny garden shed comes a series of arts-related programmes by Muine Bheag Arts Radio

FROM a tiny shed in a back garden in Bagenalstown comes a series of programmes all focussing on the arts.

Muine Bheag Arts Radio is an experimental broadcasting platform that has been set up by local organisation Muine Bheag Arts.

Their approach is based on the DIY ethos of community radio and aims to create a space for dialogue, connection and exploration through the medium of sound.

They broadcast conversations with artists and collaborators, live performances and commissioned audio works from their garden shed to the rest of the world.

They have made six episodes so far, including The Portal, a radio play written, acted and recorded by sixth-class students from St Brigid’s National School, Bagenalstown. It tells the story of the Murphy twins, Mince and Marmalade, and their associate Benice, who travel through the portal in Dublin to New York city on a mission to save Ireland from darkness.

Muine Bheag Arts led a series of workshops to develop the radio play as part of Cruinniú na nÓg 2024.

Other programmes that feature on the radio include Voice Tracking by artist Megan Hadfield; The Unseen Histories of Muine Bheag by artist Rory Mullen; Feelers by artist Niamh Seana Meehan; Live @ Communeby Muine Bheag Arts, and Transatlantic Conversation He(art)sby artists Aoife Ní Dhuinn and Falon Weaver To listen to the programmes, go to https://muinebheagarts.com/Radio or any of the major streaming platforms.
